Word by Word Qur'an Translation Sura Baqarah part 1(1-46)

The Heifer / The Cow
Surah 2: Al-Baqarah

 الم
1 ذَٰلِكَ this, (that)

2 لَا رَيْبَ no doubt, no suspicion

3  فِيهِ prep. in this, in, at, on, within

3.1 هُدًى guidance

4 لِلْمُتَّقِينَ those who ward off evil, pious, God-fearing


5 يُؤْمِنُونَ they believe

6 بِالْغَيْبِ unseen, secret, invisible

7 وَ prep. and, and also

8 يُقِيمُونَ they establish, they are steadfast

9 الصَّلَاةَ prayer

10  وَمِمَّا prep. of that, from that

11 رَزَقْنَا we have provided, bestowed, blessed, endowed with livelihood

12 نَا pl. we, us, our

13 هُمْ pl. them, they, their

14 يُنْفِقُونَ  they spend / distribute

15 بِمَا which, with

16 أُنْزِلَ revealed, sent down

17 إِلَيْكَ unto thee

18 مَا which, whatever

19  قَبْلِكَ before thee

20 بِالْآخِرَة life after death, hereafter, life to come

21 يُوقِنُونَ they are certain of,  sure, affirm

22 أُولَٰئِكَ those / (these) people

23 عَلَىٰ prep. on, upon, above

24 هُدًى guidance

25 الْمُفْلِحُونَ ap. pl. successful,

26 إِنَّ certainly, undoubtedly, doubtless

27 كَفَرُوا they disbelieved, they rejected

28 سَوَا equal, all the same

29 ءٌ whether (sign of interrogation)

30 أَأَنْذَرْتَ you warned / frightened

31 أَمْ or

32 لَمْ not

33 لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ they do / will not believe

34  خَتَمَ sealed, closed, concluded

35  قُلُوبِهِمْ  their hearts work in progress

36 سَمْعِهِمْ their ears / hearing

37  أَبْصَارِهِمْ pl. their eye-sight, eyes

38 غِشَاوَةٌ covering, dimness

39 وَلَهُمْ and for them

40 عَذَابٌ punishment, torment

41 عَظِيمٌ Great

First Ruku' Completed

42  النَّاسِ the men / mankind / people

43  مَنْ who

44 يَقُولُ he says / speaks / tells,

45 آمَنَّا we believe, we have faith,

46 مَا هُمْ they are not  

47 يُخَادِعُونَ they beguile, they deceive

48  إِلَّا but, except

49 أَنْفُسَهُمْ their person / soul

50  يَشْعُرُونَ they don't perceive realize

51 مَرَضٌ disease, illness, sickness

52 فَtherefore, then

53  زَادَ increased

54 أَلِيم painful

55 بِمَا because

56 كَانُوا they were

57  يَكْذِبُونَ they tell a lie

58 إِذَا when, whenever

59  قِيلَ pv. is said / told,

60  لَهُمْ unto them

61   لَا تُفْسِدُوا ni. pl. make not mischief, act not wickedly /corruptly

62  فِي الْأَرْضِ on the earth

63  قَالُوا  they said,

64 إِنَّمَا only, infact, verily

65  نَحْنُ we

66  مُصْلِحُونَ ap. those who put things right, reformers

67 أَلَا be aware, be careful, better understand

68  الْمُفْسِدُونَ ap. mischievous, persons, disturbance creators

69 لَٰكِنْ  but  

70   آمِنُوا im. pl. believe, become faithful,

71 كَمَا like, as, alike

72 آ what (sign of interrogation?)

73  السُّفَهَاءُ pl. foolish/insolent/ stupid persons

74  لَقُوا they met,

75 آمَنَّا  we believed / became faithful,

76  خَلَوْا they went in loneliness,  & : secluded in privacy, they are alone

77 شَيَاطِين devils, devil type behavior

78 يَمُدُّ ap. those who  scoff / sneer / laugh

79 grants leave, gives respite

80 طُغْيَان contumacy, wickedness

81  يَعْمَهُونَ they wander blindly in confusion

82 اشْتَرَوُا  they purchased / bartered

83  الضَّلَالَة deception, straying

84 هُدَىٰ guidance, right way,

85  فَمَا  so (it did) not

86  رَبِحَتْ fg. profited, benefited

87  تِجَارَتُ  commerce, trade, trafficking

88  مُهْتَدِينَ ap. rightly directed / guided persons

89 مَثَلُ example

90  كَ as, like

91 الَّذِي relative pronoun one who

92  اسْتَوْقَدَ kindled, lighted

93  نَار fire

94  فَلَمَّا when

95 أَضَاءَتْ lighted

96 حَوْلَهُ around him, his surroundings

97  ذَهَبَ took away, carried off

98 تَرَكَ left, abandoned

99 فِي in, in between

100 ظُلُمَاتٍ pl. darkness, gloom

101 لَا يُبْصِرُونَ they do not see

102 صُمٌّ pl. deaf

103 بُكْمٌ  pl. dumb

104 عُمْيٌ pl. blind

105  فَهُمْ  therefore they

106  لَا يَرْجِعُونَ they do / will not return

107 أَوْ or

108 كَ like

109 صَيِّب rain-laden cloud, rainy storm

110  السَّمَاء sky

111 رَعْدٌ thunder

112 بَرْقٌ lightening

113 يَجْعَلُونَ they thrust / put / place

114 أَصَابِع fingers

115 آذَان ears

116  الصَّوَاعِق pl. thunderclaps

117 حَذَرَ fear, danger

118 الْمَوْتِ death

119 مُحِيطٌ ap. one who surrounds, encompasses

120 يَكَادُ almost, nearly

121 يَخْطَفُ  snatches / takes away

122 كُلَّمَا as often, whenever

123 مَشَوْا they walked

124 إِذَا when

125 أَظْلَمَ became dark

126 قَامُوا they stood still

127 لَوْ if

128 شَاءَ willed, wished

129 كُلِّ شَيْءٍ everything

130 قَدِيرٌ omnipotent, command, capable, skillful

Second Ruku' Completed

131 يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ O! mankind

132  اعْبُدُوا worship

133 رَبَّ Sustainer, Lord, Provider,

134 كُم pl. your

135 الَّذِي relative pronoun one who

136 خَلَقَ created, molded, shaped,

137 لَعَلَّكُمْ so that you (pl.)

138 تَتَّقُونَ pl. you may  ward off (evil), you become righteous / pious, 33

139 جَعَلَ created, made,

140 لَكُم for you (pl.)

141 الْأَرْضَ earth

142  فِرَاشًا couch, resting place, bed

143 بِنَاءً canopy, covering

144 أَنْزَلَ sent down, revealed

145 مَاءً water

146 أَخْرَجَ brought forth

147 بِهِ therewith, with it

148 مِن prep. of, by, from

149  الثَّمَرَات fruits, gains, benefits

150 فَلَا تَجْعَلُوا ni. pl. then do not set up / appoint,

151  أَنْدَادًا partners, equivalent

152 أَنْتُمْ pl. you

153 تَعْلَمُون pl. you know / are aware

154 إِنْ if

155 كُنْتُمْ pl. you are / were

156  فِي in, within

157 رَيْب doubt, suspicion

158 نَزَّلْنَا we revealed,

159 عَلَىٰ prep. upon, on, unto

160 عَبْد slave, servant

161 فَأْتُوا im. pl. so produce / bring

162 سُورَة Surah, a chapter of the Qur'aan

163 مِثْلِهِ like it, similar to it / him
164 وَادْعُوا im. pl. and call
165  شُهَدَاءَ witnesses
166 مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ  apart from Allah
167  صَادِقِينَ ap. those who are truthful

168 فَ then
169 إِنْ if
170  لَمْ not
171  تَفْعَلُوا pl. you can do
172 لَنْ never
173 الَّتِي fg. whose, that which
174  وَقُودُ  fuel
175 هَا fg. its, her
176 حِجَارَةُ pl. stones
177 أُعِدَّتْ prepared
178 كَافِرِين ap. disbelievers, those who reject faith 

179 بَشِّرِ im. give glad tidings (good news)

180  آمَنُوا they worked, did deeds
181 الصَّالِحَات fg. pl. righteous deeds
182  أَنَّ that
183  لَهُمْ for them
184 جَنَّاتٍ gardens
185  تَجْرِي  sr. fg. flows
186  تَحْتِ underneath, under
187 أَنْهَار rivers
188 كُلَّمَا whenever
189  رُزِقُوا pv. they are provided with
190 ثَمَرَة fruit
191 هَٰذَا this
192 أُتُوا  pv. are provided, are given
193 مُتَشَابِهًا similar, similitude
194  أَزْوَاجٌ spouses

195  مُطَهَّرَةٌ pp. fg. one who is purified
196  خَالِدُونَ  ap. pl. abide forever
197 لَا يَسْتَحْيِي disdains not
198  يَضْرِبَ مَثَلًا uses a similitude, gives an example

199 بَعُوضَةً gnat, mosquito

200 فَمَا فَوْقَهَا or ought above it
201 فَأَمَّا then as
202  أَنَّهُ that it / he
203 الْحَقُّ truth
204  مَاذَا what
205 أَرَادَ desired, wished, intended
206  يُضِلُّ leads astray
207 يَهْدِي guides
208 كَثِيرًا many
209  إِلَّا except
210 فَاسِقِين ap. transgressors
211 يَنْقُضُونَ they break
212 عَهْدَ covenant
213 مِنْ بَعْدِ after it
214 مِيثَاق ratification (of covenant)

215 يَقْطَعُونَ they cut off
216 أَمَرَ commanded  

217  يُوصَلَ  pv. be joined
218  الْخَاسِرُونَ ap. losers
219 كَيْفَ how   أَمْوَاتًا
220  أَمْوَاتًا pl. dead

221 فَأَحْيَاكُمْ and (he) gave you life
222 ثُمَّ then
223 تُرْجَعُونَ pv. pl. you'll be returned
224 خَلَقَ created
225  لَكُمْ for you (pl.)
226 جَمِيعًا all
227 اسْتَوَىٰ turned (towards)
228  إِلَى towards
229 سَوَّ fashioned
230 هُنَّ fg. them

231 سَبْعَ seven
232 سَمَاوَات skies
233 عَلِيمٌ knower, aware

Third Ruku' completed

235 رَبُّكَ your Lord
236 لِ to, for
237 مَلَائِكَة angels
238 إِنِّي verily I
239 جَاعِلٌ ap. one who creates / places
240 خَلِيفَة viceroy, vicegerent, successor
241 يَسْفِكُ will shed

242 دِّمَاء blood

243 نُسَبِّحُ we proclaim (your) praise
244 نُقَدِّسُ we glorify / sanctify
245 لَكَ for Thee, for You
246 أَعْلَمُ I know

247 عَلَّمَ taught
248 الْأَسْمَاءَ names
249 كُلَّهَا all (of them)
250 عَرَضَ presented
251 أَنْبِئُونِي tell me
252 نِي me

253 هَٰؤُلَاءِ these
254  سُبْحَانَكَ Glory to You
255  لَنَا for us
256 عَلَّمْتَ You taught
257 إِنَّكَ in truth, You
258 أَنْتَ You
259 عَلِيمُ All Knowing
260 حَكِيمُ All Wise
261 فَلَمَّا and when
262 أَلَمْ أَقُلْ Did I not tell?
263 أَعْلَمُ I know

264 تُبْدُونَ pl. you reveal
265 تَكْتُمُونَ pl. you hide
266 اسْجُدُوا im. pl.bowdown, prostrate
267 إِبْلِيسَ Iblees, Satan
268 أَبَىٰ refused
269 اسْتَكْبَرَ became haughty
270 كَانَ (he) became / was
271 اسْكُنْ dwell, live 272 كُلَا eat
273 رَغَدًا  plentifully

274 حَيْثُ wherever, anywhere
275شِئْتُمَا you desired / wished 276 لَا تَقْرَبَا do not go near
277 هَٰذِهِ this
278 شَّجَرَة tree
379 فَتَكُونَا you (will) become
280 أَزَلَّ made (them) slip

281 هُمَا they both
282 عَنْ from

283 هَا it / her

284 أَخْرَجَ got (them) out
285 كَانَا they (two) were
286 اهْبِطُوا get down, alight, disembark
287  بَعْضُ some
288 عَدُوٌّ enemy
289 مُسْتَقَرٌّ destination, dwelling place
290 مَتَاعٌ means of livelihood, provisions, goods
291 حِينٍ period, time
292 فَتَلَقَّىٰ thereafter (he) learnt
293 كَلِمَات words
294 تَابَ عَلَيْ turned towards
295 تَّوَّابُ oft-returning, one who forgives
296 فَإِمَّا and if, then whenever
297 يَأْتِيَنَّكُمْ comes to you (pl.)
298 مِنِّي from me

299  تَبِعَ followed
300 هُدَايَ my guidance
301 خَوْفٌ fear

302 عَلَيْهِمْ on them
303 يَحْزَنُونَ they shall grieve
304 كَفَرُوا they rejected faith,  they disbelieved
305 كَذَّبُوا they belied
306 آيَاتِنَا our signs
307 أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ companions of the fire, inhabitants of the fire

4th Ruku' completed

308 بَنِي إِسْرَائِيل children of Isreal
309  اذْكُرُوا remember, recall call to mind
310 أَوْفُوا fulfill
311 عَهْد covenant, promise
312 أُوفِ I (shall) fulfill
313 إِيَّايَ me alone
314 فَارْهَبُون and fear me, and have awe of me,

315 أَنْزَلْتُ I revealed / have sent down
316 مُصَدِّقًا that which confirms 317 لِمَا that which 318 مَعَكُمْ with you

319 لَا تَكُونُوا be not, do not

320  أَوَّلَ the first, prime
321 ا تَشْتَرُوا do not sell
322 آيَاتِي my signs
323 ثَمَنًا price
324 قَلِيلًا little, small
325 لَا تَلْبِسُوا do not cover / confound
326 بَاطِلِ falsehood
327 تَكْتُمُوا do not conceal,
328 أَقِيمُوا perform, be steadfast in
329 ارْكَعُوا bow down, bend down
330 الرَّاكِعِينَ those that bow down  
331  أَ do? (what?)
332 تَأْمُرُونَ you enjoin
333 بِرِّ right conduct, piety, righteousness

334 تَنْسَوْنَ you forget
335  أَنْفُسَكُمْ yourselves
336 تَتْلُونَ you read / recite
337 أَفَلَ will then (you) not

338  تَعْقِلُونَ you understand / think
339 اسْتَعِينُوا seek help
340  لَكَبِيرَةٌ indeed hard
341 الْخَاشِعِينَ those who are humble
342  يَظُنُّونَ they bear in mind
343 أَنَّهُمْ that they
344 مُلَاقُو  those who are going to meet
345 رَاجِعُونَ those who return
